Unsupportive Families

Unsupportive Families Part I
Thanksgiving is right around the corner so now’s the time to address unsupportive families. Your parents don’t approve of your fiancé. We’re not just saying boyfriend, but fiancé. It’s crunch time before the wedding and plans are in motion…yet, Mom and Dad aren’t big fans of Mr. Right.
So, how do you deal with unsupportive families? Does this affect your decision to move forward with a marriage? Basically, do you choose your man over your family? Perhaps, they think he could be a snazzier dresser or have a better haircut. Maybe they’re not crazy about his family, his paycheck, his car. Or maybe they fell in love with the navy officer you dated in college and feel no one else will ever compare. Whatever the reason, and despite how happy you are to be engaged, your parents have yet to embrace their future son-in-law (though at this point, you’d settle for an acknowledgment of his existence). In this situation, the hardest part of planning your wedding may be the one thing you can’t control: your parents.
1) Be Up Front
Tell your parents that you would like them to be part of our day, but that their involvement is their choice. A decision to respond in a proactive-rather than reactive-way to your parents help keep things in perspective.
2) Keep Your Chin Up
A positive attitude will be your best defense against your parents’ snide comments or chilly indifference. Before these things make an ugly dent in your earnest enthusiasm, develop a motto with the staying power to get you through. Repeating a mantra, something that keeps you calm and focused, can be the quickest way back to sanity. Unfortunately, when you are an adult, your parent’s don’t always know what is best for you. You do. Live your life and hopefully your parents will be proven wrong about your “big mistake” on marrying Mr. Not Good Enough. Unsupportive families can sometimes come around when they see how good it is for you.

Children at your Wedding

Children at your Wedding

Setting guidelines and expectations are crucial if you want children at your wedding (or in the wedding). For example, perhaps you have an adorable little chicky poo in mind as a suitable flower girl candidate aka your childhood friend’s little girl. But when it comes to your sister’s kids, your neighbors’teenage son, or your boss’s brood of four you really want to avoid having to invite them (or have them show up uninvited) to the wedding. Here’s the good news; you can do all that. Have your flower girl and consider giving your sister a free pass to bring her kiddos since she is after all your sister.

Here’s the bad news though. You will look like a total hypocrite if you invite select kids but don’t allow others. And you’re walking a fine line between doing what you want and being rude slash hurting feelings. Tread lightly. No one wants to leave anyone out but it’s okay if you don’t want children at your wedding.

If you do end up having kids as guests, prepare accordingly. Depending on your planner or coordinator (if you have one) and how rad she is, she may bring snacks, games, activities and so forth to keep the kids busy and out of your hair during the reception (and ceremony if said kids are spectators and not part of the wedding party). If it’s in the budget, look into hiring some sort of separate entertainment for the kids like a babysitter, a clown, a fairy princess, or some sort of person who can make sure the kids don’t get bored, restless, or out of hand on their own. Check with your venue to see if there’s a room this can be set aside, preferably close to the main event so parents are within a close enough distance should a problem arise. Ask the caterer for options kids will eat and get some juice boxes. Lot’s of juice boxes. Or sparkling pop for the older kids for the champagne toast.
You can make it work, and to your expectations. Just know that with kids in the (sticky) situation, your dance floor might attract some younger dancing kings and queens.

Bad Etiquette

Dealing with Bad Etiquette from Family and Friends
You are bound to see bad etiquette at some point or another throughout the wedding planning process. Etiquette can
come in the form of the proper way to congratulate you, telling you how to run your day, becoming a prima donna with special requests galore, and/or having uncouth behavior or actions.
So your third cousin comes out of the woodwork and asks if she is invited. Well, not everyone has the manner and
grace as you my darling. And it’s tactless to assume. It’s hard to try and invite everyone, but I assume your third
cousin probably is not going to make the cut. You should be honest, and let them know that you are having a small, intimate wedding and unfortunately you cannot invite extended family. Hopefully, she will understand.
Yes, you want to make sure your guests are comfortable, well accommodated, and of course, having fun. However,
when your step-grandma demands that you serve Pellegrino instead of tap water and that she only eats organic, gluten-free; tell you can accommodate her diet certainly on the gluten-free part, especially if she has Celiac Disease.
All other requests are a bit lofty, and to ask you is completely rude. If they have a food allergy or sensitivity, absolutely 100% without a doubt you should make sure they are well-cared for. Otherwise, they can pass on whatever they don’t prefer that is served to them.Let’s say that you’ve sent out your invites…and it was sent to

“Miss Joanna Smith.” However, the RSVP card reads“Miss Joanna Smith +1.” Um, so your friend thinks she is now running the guest list. How awesome of her. Is she also paying for +1’s food and drinks? Simply tell your friend this is not allowed. Unfortunately the invitation was only addressed to her, and not her plus a guest. Hopefully, she will understand.
Some of these things may and may not sound familiar to you. If they do, be gracious, honest, and hopefully your family and friends will understand. This day is about the bride and groom.

Wedding Website

Wedding Website
As a new bride you’re sure to be gushing with the news! What better way than to create your own wedding website or
Wedsite? Having a wedding website is a great way to keep guests and bridal party informed and share your love story. Putting information online can also reduce the amount of detail needed in your invitations, saving on printing and postage.
There are dozens to choose from and it all depends on how savvy you want to be. If you’d like it to be easy and foolproof we suggest Wedding Wire or Nearly Weds. These sites provide templates in which you just fill in the information and pictures. The Knot and Wedding Paper Divas are also great choices that allow you to spread the word about your big day. They have a variety of backgrounds and themes to choose from.
Now, if you want to go all out, you can absolutely pay for your own site. One of the top sites this year is EWedding and prices range from $5-15 per month, depending on how much you want to customize it. Some brides will prefer the basics and with everything else you have to pay for, we think a website might be towards the bottom of that list. That $5 can add up each month so be sure to read the fine print on renewing your website and don’t leave it on auto renew.
Another great site is Wed Simple. This is also a paid site ranging from $10 per month to a onetime only flat fee of $80. This site is cool because you can also plan your wedding on it! This site offers RSVP with meal preference options (something many sites don’t have), a reception seating planning tool, Facebook integration, your own blog to keep your guests entertained.
So, get to it! You don’t have to be a web designer to create a beautiful and informative wedding website site that you can remember long after your wedding.

NYFW 2014 Roundup

NYFW 2014 Roundup

It’s about this time every year where we begin to dust off our open-toed shoes and dream of warmer days ahead. But for the fashion elite, February marks the coming of Fall as they look way ahead to predict the biggest looks and trends for the most impressionable time of year. Don’t get us wrong, Spring is always a welcome showing for florals, sleeveless looks and the newly reinnovated crop top, but Fall is and has always been the big-time when it comes to high-end couture. This year was no different with the biggest names in the biz closing the shows with the most talked about trends. Here is our take and what you should start prepping for now… [pinit]

NYFW 2014 RoundupSapphire Blue: By far the hottest hue seen all over the runways, this purplish-blue stole the show with major players like Calvin Klein Collection showing it in ultra sleek and modern silhouettes. The key is to let the bold color do the talking and keep things pretty minimal. Other designers went a big further with the color offering separates that made a statement but also kept this bright blue as a neutral accessory, showing off how versatile it will be this Fall.[pinit]
NYFW 2014 RoundupSuiting: The obsession with the dress is over Sorry Brides, but the new menswear inspired vibe is all about suiting separates. From wide leg pants and jackets to ultra sleek suits with plunging necklines, the boy’s club is calling the shots this year with a whole new look for women. Thinking of a LWD for your wedding rehearsal? Go for a jumpsuit instead. It’s playful and sophisticated and a welcome change from the typical and often expected dress option. Ralph Lauren pretty much shut down the runway with his superior take on the look he has been perfecting his entire career. This is one trend that is also so classic and timeless we love seeing it reinterpreted this Fall.

Capes: We saw this one coming from a mile away when Gwyneth Paltrow showed up to the Oscars last year in a custom white Tom Ford dress donning and ultra modern cape. The look is actually very reminiscent of the 1960’s “Jackie O” era and it still works today. Lupita N’yongo earned our best dressed award at the Globes for her red hot Ralph Lauren cape gown and we know there are plenty more capes to come!

Fur: Fur accents and embellishments ( real and faux alike) were a key element in layered and textured looks from everyone from DVF to Altuzarra. The idea for fall is taking traditional pieces like jackets and tops to include luxe fur accents like collars, sleeves, and slim fur jackets in all kinds of bold prints.[pinit]
Jenny PackhamFeathers: Formal favorites Jenny Packham and Naeem Khan stuck with their outrageously gorgeous beaded looks and added a hint of feathering for movement. The look is perfect for bridal and adds an extra dose of glam to an already perfected look. NYFW 2014 Roundup.[pinit]
Naeem Khan
