You want your wedding to be the most memorable day of your life, and you want others to remember it as well. Therefore, when choosing your wedding photographer, it is imperative to find someone that is professional and knows what they’re doing.

Wedding Photography 1Hiring a wedding photographer should be one of the first things on your list of things to do before the big day. Wedding photographer’s have the busiest schedules on Saturdays during the spring, so if that’s when you’re planning to have your wedding, book at least a year in advance. However, if you’re considering a wedding out-of-season or on a Sunday, you’ll have better chances of getting the photographer of your choice in shorter notice.

Asking your friends and family members who their favorite photographers are is a good first step. They will most likely know first handedly how the photographer is, and if not first handedly, they know someone else who had that photographer and gave them a rave review. By looking at your friends or family member’s wedding photo albums, you can tell if it’s the type of photography you’d like to have at your wedding.

Other people to ask for ideas are the other people involved in your wedding. Your caterer, venue manager, florist, baker, wedding planner will have an idea of photographers they’ve worked with in the past and will be able to give you some suggestions.

If you already have an idea of what type of wedding photography you like, take a look at the photographer’s previous work. Decide on the type of photography you’re looking for, whether you want traditional, serious, fun, witty, clever or a million other possibilities. You’re going to want the person that is able to catch that tone right away. This is probably the most important aspect that you’ll want in your wedding photographer. Someone that can capture the moment and someone that has an understanding for the type of wedding it’s going to be.

Meet with the wedding photographer throughout planning your wedding so you know they’re the best fit. You’ll want someone that fits into the wedding, is more along for the ride and wants to capture your joyous day.

Costs and equipment should be the last step once you’ve figured out the person that you want. Know what type of photography equipment they have and what they’re expecting for pay. Once you know the details you’ll be able to make an informed decision that will make your wedding even more memorable.
