Unique Bridal Or Wedding Shower Ideas

The fondest memories of many people’s wedding planning process are the fun parties, showers, and celebrations with friends and family. From bridal or wedding showers to day after the wedding brunches these events have so many theme or decorative options. One of the first engaged celebrations you’ll have is your wedding shower. Here are some unique bridal or wedding shower ideas you probably haven’t seen yet.

1. Have the guests bring a photo of them with the bride/groom when they were young and now to create a meaningful keepsake photo album.

Weddings are sentimental for the friends and family of the soon-to-be married couple. That sentimental feeling comes from your friends’ and families’ happiness and pride for you. Celebrate the love your friends and family have for you. It is something special you will always have to look back on as you start your married lives together.

2. Menu Trivia

Everyone has played couple trivia games, but have you played couples’ favorite food trivia games? Nope? Now’s your chance. Have the engaged couple’s favorite foods at the shower and have everyone guess whose favorite food is whose. This is a fun way to eat yummy food and learn fun facts about the couple the other side of the family may not know.

3. Wedding Shower Playlist

Ask the couple for each year they were dating to give you ‘their’ songs. Create a shower playlist of songs from when the couple first started dating until now. You may need to add to it a bit, but ‘their’ songs will give you a guide.  Music brings back so many memories. What better way to celebrate a couple’s relationship journey than to go through a timeline of their favorite music together? Keep the playlist to give to the couple later to keep.

4. Have each guest to the shower bring a bead they feel best represents the couple to create a meaningful piece of jewelry or decoration.

Having unique keepsakes to remember these special celebrations will be treasured long after the wedding is over. Think friendship bracelets from middle school, but better and more meaningful. Have each guest put their bead into a sealed envelope with a short note on why they chose their bead. Later have the couple open each one so they can read how much they mean to each of their guests. Later, string together the beads for the couple so they can hang it in their home, or wear it as a reminder of their friends’ and families’ love and support for them.

How to Pull off a Surprise Wedding

A darling wedding was recently featured on one of our favorite go-to wedding blogs, Style Me Pretty.  The bride was absolutely stunning in her classic ¾ length sleeve Chantilly lace gown and her groom was flawless.  Their décor was subtle and had guests seated at a large outdoor restaurant venue that looked like a cobblestone street in Paris. Every detail was perfectly executed, but one thing made this wedding uniquely one for the books: None of the guests knew it was a wedding!

When guests arrived to the venue for what they thought was the groom’s surprise 30th birthday party, they were greeted with a beautifully scripted note letting them in on the little secret. The photos are absolutely priceless; full of tears and screams of joy. We can only hope to be a guest at one of these of the moment fetes sometime soon!

So we got to thinking: What does it take to pull off such a covert operation as a surprise wedding? Here were a few tips we found from the bride in this story and a few industry insiders who can only hope to see more of these type of weddings in the future!

  1. Keep it quiet, and let it slip: This has to be the trickiest part of all. Not telling your nearest and dearest about the biggest day of your life can be torture, but is well worth the pay-off in reaction. Of course there are always exceptions in a surprise scenario. Some of the guests that might think they are merely missing a birthday or engagement party might skipped the event since it may require travel – in this case, trust us, it’s worth spilling the beans. You want to make sure your secret doesn’t stop your favorite people from being there. They may never let you live it down!
  2. Make something up! : Some brides decide to surprise guests at their “engagement” party, while others create an entirely new scenario like a birthday or Bon Voyage so that their guests are completely caught off guard. Sometimes the more casual the event they think they are attending, the more exciting it is when they realize they are at a wedding.
  3. Gift or no gift?  No one gets married for the gifts. But for some couples that expect to leave their wedding with a little extra to start their new lives with , may be disappointed with the lack of envelopes they see since guests don’t come prepared. While this is hardly a reason not to have the wedding you want, most guests gladly send a gift after the wedding as they would with any other.  They understand the time and money spent and want to show they wish you well.  Some guest might even be inclined to be more generous than usual given the once in a lifetime memory you shared with them.

DIY Photo Backdrop

Setting up a mini photo shoot for your wedding guests is a great way to keep friends entertained, capture hilarious moments, and create a fun wedding memento. Many wedding photographers have begun offering photo stations as part of their packages, but in the event that they don’t or it’s simply too expensive, here are a few tips for creating your own photo op at your wedding, engagement party, or bridal shower.

First things first, you’ll need some sort of backdrop. If your wedding or shower happens to be at a fab location with interestingly textured walls or breathtaking scenery, simply rope off a section that can be designated for mini photo shoots. If not, all you need is a photo backdrop (rentable from most camera or party stores) or some funky fabric that can be draped in front of the wall.

Once you’ve got your backdrop in place, you’ll want to provide your guests with plenty of props. These can be as classy or goofy as you want. The key is to offer an abundance of choices so that each photo is unique instead of looking like carbon copies. Some elegant ideas include empty frames, mini chalkboards, masquerade masks, or homemade signs. Couples hoping for hilarity can stock prop boxes with fake mustaches, silly hats, feather boas, oversized glasses, superhero costumes, and fill-in-the-blank thought bubbles made with dry-erase material or chalkboards.

Next, you’ll need a photographer or camera in place to capture the sweet and comical moments of the night. If you’ve got a photographically-gifted friend, ask them to set up shop, or position the camera with a tripod and allow guests to snap their own pics. To ensure quality snapshots, ask your photographer about the cost for hiring an assistant or intern to man the booth all night. If your event will be lasting well into the evening, make sure the photo station has ample lighting.

Create a lasting memento by having the best photos printed and put into an album, or order a printed photo book online with all of the shots. Let guests take home their favorite prints as well by setting up a photo printer at the event, or displaying proofs on an online gallery.

Engagement Party Basics

You’re engaged! Congratulations! Now, let’s celebrate. The engagement party, while not an absolutely necessity by any means, is a fun and relaxed way to kick off the wedding planning festivities early. Here’s a quick overview on the engagement party essentials…

Who: Traditionally, the bride’s family is responsible for hosting the engagement party, but every couple is different. It’s completely acceptable to have a party hosted by the groom’s family or a group of close pals. Or, if you prefer, host your own party in your home and invite friends to celebrate your good fortune with you.

What: The engagement party itself can be anything you want it to be, from a classy, lavish soiree to a backyard BBQ. Essentially, it’s just an opportunity to celebrate the news with the people you love so the theme can be as elegant or laid-back as you want.

When: The engagement party is the first official event of the wedding and traditionally happens shortly after you and your fiancé get engaged. There’s no set rule on how quickly a party should be hosted after the question is popped, but it’s typical for the celebration to be held in the first few weeks or months. This can vary depending on how long the engagement is slated to last. The important thing is that the engagement party is a separate celebration, not scheduled too close to the actual wedding.

Where: Determining a location for the engagement party is entirely up to you, or the party’s hosts. Some couples opt for their own home, or the home of a family member, while others go all out and rent out a hall or outside locale for the festivities. Just like the wedding, the party can be held anywhere you like.

Why: The main point of an engagement party is simply to celebrate that you two lovebirds are engaged. Gifts shouldn’t be expected, but don’t be surprised if some guests decide to bring one along. Registry information shouldn’t be included on the engagement party invites, but it isn’t a bad idea to already have your registry completed (or at least started) by the time the party rolls around to give guests some direction on gift purchasing should they choose to buy one.

Engagement Party Planning

You’re engaged! Congratulations! Now, it’s time to celebrate. Plan a fabulous engagement party with these simple tips…

Schedule It Soon: The point of an engagement party is to celebrate your engagement, so don’t wait too long to plan the festivities. The engagement party should be held relatively soon after the proposal, within a few weeks or months. Just make sure the party is scheduled closer to your proposal than to your wedding day.

Spread the Word: The guest list can be as big or small as you want it, but one rule of thumb applies: anyone invited to the engagement party should also be invited to the wedding. Invites can be as casual or formal as you prefer too. An evite, word-of-mouth invite, or formal invitation is acceptable, depending on the overall theme of the day.

Choose a Theme: The engagement party’s theme and décor should be different than the wedding. This is your chance to have a little fun. Plan a beach BBQ or fall festival, or opt for a dreamy romantic evening outside. You definitely don’t want the engagement party to outshine the wedding, but it can be its own unique and inspired event.

Arrange the Food: Since the party can be as informal or formal as you choose, there is no set rule about food. If you’re hosting a lavish affair and money isn’t an issue, plan a nice dinner for your guests. Otherwise, it’s totally reasonable to serve hors d’oeuvres, gather for brunch, or simply have a dessert bar.

Have fun: The party is supposed to be a celebration of your engagement so don’t be afraid to have fun! Plan some interesting and exciting activities for your guests, such as games or dancing with a Chicago Wedding DJ.
