2021/2022 Wedding Cake Ideas

Cake at a wedding is such a classic. In years past, people were leaning toward cupcakes, candy bars, and even donuts for their wedding dessert of choice. But coming back strong for this wedding planning season is the classic wedding cake! 2021/2022 has plenty of stunning, yummy, & creative wedding cake ideas. Here are some of our favorites sure to inspire your wedding cake selection.

Geode Cake

From the trend of gemstones and crystals comes the geode cake! Geode cakes are easily customizable for your wedding colors. The sparkle, often made from sugar, adds fun and formality to your wedding cake. Below is a geode cake by Erica Koren Cakery. This is just one beautiful option of many options for shapes and colors.

Timeless White Wedding Cake With A Twist

A white wedding cake is a classic option! There are so many variations and textures you could choose from. If you have a lace wedding dress, you can choose a coordinating lace design. If you are having a wedding with lots of vibrant colors, a simple white cake is a great neutral option. For a simple white wedding cake, frosting can be in beautiful patterns without overwhelming your color scheme. The beautiful cake below with sugar pearls is by The Cakery Inc.

Watercolor Cake

A fun, colorful option is watercolor cakes! We love how different shades of the same color, or even different colors, can be blended together in one cake. Often, these cakes pull together multiple different wedding colors making them a beautiful decorative piece for your wedding reception. This artful watercolor cake is by Two Wild Seeds.

Drip Cake

This wedding cake idea is perfect for the chocolate or fruit lovers! Drip cakes can have either a chocolate drip or a fruit flavored drizzle down the cake. This is a great choice if you are indecisive as to what kind of cake you want. If you are in between chocolate and vanilla, you could choose vanilla cake with a chocolate drip to make each of you happy. The delicious drip cake below is by The Sugar Path.

We hope the photos above will make your wedding cake selection easy as cake! If you have already chosen your wedding cake, we’d love to hear which you chose! Comment what kind of cake you chose below! For more wedding planning inspiration & tips, check out the Chicago Wedding Blog posts below! Happy Planning!

Spring Blue Table Inspiration

Blue Spring Wedding Inspiration

Blue Spring Wedding Inspiration

One way to get out of the winter wedding planning blues is to look forward to spring. You have heard of the proverbial something blue, but this blue spring wedding inspiration goes further. Here is some unique blue spring wedding inspiration that will get you spring wedding ready!

Blue Marbled Trends

You can incorporate this design to save the dates, invitations, wedding cake, or flowers. A marbled design brings together multiple hues of blue. For the more indecisive couples, you don’t have to choose choose one shade of blue if you go with this marbled trend!

Fifty Shades Of Gray/Blue

A pretty way to soften a blue color scheme is to add grays, whites, and different shades of blue. We recommend you choose a few areas to add strong color. Then, you can balance the more pungent colors with soft grays and whites. The easiest way to do this is with the bridal party or flowers. Men can wear any blue, gray, or black color to coordinate.

Light Blue Spring Bridesmaids Dresses

One trend we love for 2020/2021 spring weddings is a return to light blue bridesmaids dresses. A soft blue says spring without being too overdone. Your bridesmaids love that many shades of light blue are flattering on all skin tones. We all look forward to lighter hues of spring clothes after a long midwest winter. Don’t you?

Blue Spring Wedding Decor

We love dramatic tablescapes with mixed textures and shapes. This past year hanging canopies of glass baubles and flowers have been popular. You can use different shades of blue fabric as a table runner. There are plenty of light blue glass ornaments that can add a whimsical touch to your wedding. Another trend for this year is velvet. You could tie blue velvet ribbon to a lantern, or centerpiece. Keep in mind it is important your guests can see each other to speak across the table. Avoid going too big or tall with centerpieces. Sometimes the simpler the better.

Are you having a blue spring wedding? We would love to share your photos! If you would like to share, please e-mail us (at hello@chicagoweddingblog.com) your photos with vendors credited. In the meantime, share this post with your engaged friends to inspire them! Happy wedding planning!

Wedding Cake Trends

This year we’ve seen a lot fun wedding cake trends! These trends will likely continue into 2020. We will take a look at which wedding cake trends couples are choosing.

The fern is taking over the ever popular eucalyptus greens we see on cakes. The fern gives your cake an elegant rustic appeal. This is great if you still want the all white butter cream cake, but with a fun twist.

Another fun wedding cake trend we’ve seen is the donut cake! Donuts are like cake right? Why not have them for your wedding cake and displayed gorgeously. Now this can mean anything from a donut wall, which is still a fan favorite, to a cake in the shape of donuts, to tiers of donuts on plates that look like a cake. You get to be super creative with flavors that every guest will love!

If you don’t like going over the top, why not try the one tier wedding cake? It’s simple, elegant and you can even dish up a few different flavors if you can’t decide which ones you want! A great way to display several cakes on a table for the picky eater in your family. Or you can even have the single tier cakes shaped into designs like fancy hats or fruits.

No matter what kind of wedding cake trend you follow, budget is always a factor. A set of single tier cakes may be a little more cost efficient than a huge show stopper. But there’s a wedding cake for every bride and at the end of the day it’s the taste that matters! Have fun trying new flavors and talking to vendors to see which will fit your needs.

Unique Desserts

This year we are seeing quirky and unique desserts offered at receptions! Think donut wall, dessert bar or make your sundaes. We will take a look at some of the most popular options for your big day!  Desserts can offer you the opportunity to show off your style too.

  1. You can use a desserts bar to showcase your flare. If you and your partner want to celebrate your heritage why not do a nationality themed sweets table? You could fill it with your choice of native foods. For example you could do a Mexican Pan Dulce desserts bar where guests are free to take home the delicious pastries too. Giving guests mini bags/plates to take home is a great idea to thank your friends and families for coming.

2. We are loving the donut wall this year too! You can create the wall however fits in the space you have. You can use simple cardboard with pegs to hang the fried treats on or have them stacked. It’s also fun to have other desserts around the donuts like cupcakes or individual cake pops.

3. You can still have your cake too! The wedding cake is, of course, a special piece that shouldn’t be over looked! You can set the wedding cake in the middle of the desserts table so that the other sweets will make it the center of attention. We love the idea of serving pieces of the main cake alongside other options. That gives your guests lots of choices. So, if some of them prefer mini pies or candy to cake then they have a way to enjoy their sweet tooth!

Metallic Wedding

Hello Brides! We are loving the Metallic wedding accents and breezy metallic dress silhouettes this year. Metallics can range from gold, silver and all the shades inbetween. You will love the sparkle and glimmer they can add to a wedding!

Sparkly gold and silver gowns with metallic beading are gorgeous. They’re great for all seasons too. Metallic wedding accents can brighten up a winter wedding or add mystery to a fall wedding. A summer wedding wouldn’t be the same without sparkle! We also love the off the shoulder trend that is hot right now for wedding gowns!

Breezy skirts and flowing, airy material like organza and tulle are also great for a metallic wedding accent. They are the essence of a summer evening elegance. They are also materials that lend themselves nicely to a destination wedding since they pack up a little better than a full ball gown. Metallic wedding dresses are also great for a second look for the reception if you’d like more dazzle on your big day! They can be a little more informal but still glamorous.

Another way to incorporate metallic wedding accents is on your cake. We love the naked cake this year and a way to dress that up is to have metallic sheen on it!

The cake is the centerpiece at your reception so why not make it sparkle even more? The best part of metallic wedding accents is they go with any color scheme. The pop of silver or gold can really take your little details into suave and gorgeous. What other day is it perfectly appropriate to be over the top anyway? We love adding metallics to shoes, bridesmaid dresses or the food!

Wedding Cupcakes

Wedding Cupcakes

You’ve planned most of the details, booked the church and reception hall, now you’re left with the fun part! Besides the meal tasting, the other fun part of a wedding is the cake tasting. Now, the best decision is chocolate, vanilla, fruit, red velvet? And what frosting? What will adorn your cake?

Let us take a tangent off the traditional cake, though, and venture into another fantastic option. Wedding cupcakes. These delicious little treats can still convey the elegance and beauty of your big day but there’s also something nostalgic and just fun about unwrapping a cupcake!

Some things to consider first, of course, is cost. Wedding cakes average $4-5 per slice while cupcakes average about $2. However, you need to consider how you’re going to display them, decorative stands and how intricate you want them designed. If you choose wedding cupcakes in order to save money keep it simple.

The style of the wedding cupcake trend lends a light and whimsical feeling to your wedding. You may want to consider the “style” of the people attending and your vision. Some people consider cupcake too casual for weddings or worse, cheap. But, ultimately it’s your day and when they taste the decadent, moist cupcake they may just change their minds.

The other trip up using cupcakes is what do you cut for your wedding cake? Easy, just get a 6 inch cake to place on top of the cupcake tower and you have something to cut! You can even freeze the rest of it for your one year anniversary. So, whether you’re looking for something non-traditional or want to save a little money, cupcakes seem like a great answer!

Be sure to check out the The Sugar Path for your wedding cupcakes.

Golf Themed Wedding

Golf Themed Wedding

Do your parents belong to the local country club? If so, you might be able to reap some major benefits on your bottom line and extras if you book your big day there. Some country clubs offer discounts for members and can really give you a bang for your buck.

Most country clubs have golf courses included on the premises. Why not include that theme into your wedding day? From argyle socks to golf ball décor, you can never go wrong with this uber preppy style!

Here are a few ways to incorporate golfing into your theme:

1) The Attire

I wouldn’t suggest the bride do too much to immerse her look in the golfing theme; however, the guys are fair game. From argyle socks to golf ball inspired cuff links, these are just a few ways to incorporate the look and feel of the game.

2) The cake

Petite golf ball cakes or mini doughnut balls are a cute way to pay homage to the game. If you don’t want it to be your main wedding cake, suggest to your sweetie a “groom’s cake” to have a little more fun with your theme.

3) Grand Entrance / Exit

You can’t forget the golf cart! This could be a unique way to bring the bride to the ceremony spot. Not crazy about that idea? What about your getaway vehicle? The wedding party can decorate the cart in a fun fashion as your private mobile post ceremony.

4) The Décor

Your décor can sprinkle in as much golf-y goodness, from “here comes the bride” flags that mimic the flags on the course, prints inspired by golf wear, to the wedding favors. Colors to think about incorporating into your palette are bold reds, yellow, green, and even navy blue. Pew bows could have small round white flower balls attached to them or use golf flags on each pew. The bridal bouquet should be all white to resemble a golf ball. Use indoor/outdoor grass/carpeting as an isle runner. Keep a supply of mini-pencils handy for your guests to send you their best wishes in your guest book. Attach tees to your unity candle to complement the links feel as you seal your wedding vows for now and for always. However, if your wedding is actually taking place on a golf course, consider sealing your vows with a shot for the hole together!

5) Program

Ever think of putting a little twist on your wedding program? Your program can mimic a golf score card. Little details like this keep your theme consistent while having a little fun.

Vendor Spotlight Boutique Bites Fine Catering

Boutique Bites is a Chicago-based luxury catering firm that serves up food that is equally as delicious as it is beautiful. Started in 2008 by owner Elaina Vasquez, the concept is food that looks almost too good to eat and when you check out their site, you’ll know exactly what we mean.  Elaina’s blog boasts intricately designed dishes that are inspired by her love of fashion (we particularly were intrigued by a purple chip with a scoop of caviar that mimicked a similarly decadent runway look!)  And the theme can be seen throughout much of her other creations- mini burgers in Louis Vuitton-inspired print boxes, and bites that are so rich in color they themselves could be featured in Vogue Magazine.

Pinterest: Pins of the Week

Candy Necklace Napkin Ring.  The blog we found this image on may be written in another language, but that didn’t stop us from loving this idea and pinning its gorgeousness!  The candy necklace provides the ideal amount of childhood nostalgia, while the pastel color is perfect for the quickly approaching spring.  The simple white linens and old school name tag keep the focus on the candy necklace.   And if guests can’t wait for wedding cake, they can always take a nibble or two out of their napkin ring!

The Naked Wedding Cake.  Wedding cakes have long served as the symbol for tradition and wedding day celebrations, and over the years, they’ve gone through quite the transformation.  From tiered and tall to substituted with cupcakes, the wedding cake has seen it all.  Now, a new trend is taking over, as couples embrace “naked” cakes.  With exposed layers, stacked butter cream, and simply displayed fruit, these cakes take a “less frills” approach.  Perhaps this cake is the perfect example of less is more, because we are in love!

Pine cone Place cards.  Pine cones tend to be something we only see once a year, as the holiday season hits it’s peak.  They conjure up images of warm nights by the fire and cinnamon scented candles.  However, this pin has us rethinking the holiday only name that pine cones have taken on.  The neon paint gives this natural place card holder a fresh look, making it appropriate for just about any season.  Aren’t quite a fan of neon?  Think about a more subtle color, such as robin’s egg blue or lavender.  Perfect for a spring soirée.
